BENNETT'S POND PYRAMID LOOP I

In spite of the fact that I crushed my legs yesterday I decided to go out and try to find some new routes to run. I'm a creature of habit and if I don't push myself I'll run the exact same routes until I've worn ruts into them. It was cool and sunny so I figured I'd go for a walk. This is what I found.

  1. Good lord, if I ran the same training routes you did, I'd probably have six sprained ankles. I know you're training for an ultra - is it a trail one???

  2. It's a 50k trail Ultra in Northern Maryland. Most of the pictures are rock ledges off to the side of the trails but there are some sections where the footing gets pretty technical. I'm slowly getting used to it but my balance has improved quite a bit in the last few months. You also can't tell in some of the photos that it's so steep I slid down sections. I don't know how hard the course will be for my race and since I've never done this before I figure I'll make it as difficult as possible.

About the ankles... the secret is wearing trail shoes that are low to the ground. I still tweak them at times but so far, so good.

Thanks for being the only person that reads this thing.

  3. It strikes me that training for a trail race, especially one of any difficulty, would be different from training from a road race. In a road race, speed is the only concern, while in a trail race, avoiding injuries also becomes a major concern. I wonder how much cardio training you're actually getting, since I imagine that you can't run too fast on such technical terrain. Are you doing any speed work?
